Creating a high-quality dental impression at home is easy when you follow these clear instructions. Our impression kit uses VPS (Vinyl Polysiloxane) material, known for its accuracy and ease of use. This guide walks you through each step and shows you how to avoid common mistakes that can affect the quality of your impression—especially important for clear retainers, aligners, or any device with a palate plate.
📦 What’s in Your Kit #
- Impression trays (Medium and Large sizes)
- VPS impression material (white and blue parts)
- Return form (sent via email)
🧰 What You’ll Need #
- Mirror
- Timer or clock
- Zip-seal plastic bag
- Clean, dry hands
🧼 Step 1: Preparation #
Make sure the impression material is at room temperature (64–75 °F / 18–24 °C). Brush your teeth and wash your hands thoroughly. If you wear fixed braces, please have your dentist take the impression. Rinse the trays with warm water and dry them before use.
📏 Step 2: Tray Selection #
Try each tray to see which one fits best without pressing against the outside of your teeth. There should always be a small space between your teeth and the tray walls. If the tray touches your teeth, especially at the front or sides, your impression may be distorted—this is critical for precise devices like aligners.
đź‘‹ Step 3: Mixing the Material #
- Upper Jaw: 2 white + 2 blue portions
- Lower Jaw: 1 white + 1 blue portion
Knead the material for 30 seconds until it’s a smooth, light blue color—no white streaks or marbling! White streaks mean improper mixing, which can cause weak spots or bubbles in the impression. Work quickly—VPS begins to set in about 1 minute.
Once mixed, spread it evenly into the tray, ensuring full coverage up to the tray’s edges—including the back and sides. Incomplete filling can lead to a missing palate area or shallow gum capture.
🦷 Step 4: Position and Insert the Tray #
Using a mirror, center your teeth in the tray and insert it straight and evenly. Do not bite down at an angle or move the tray once placed—this causes drag marks and distorted teeth shapes. For upper impressions, press the tray upward until you feel your teeth touch the bottom of the tray.
Important: The impression should be deep enough that your teeth contact the tray base. Shallow impressions can miss the gum line, making them unusable for most appliances.
Make sure the material flows into the palate area (for upper impressions). Missing this part can affect any device with a palate plate.
⏱️ Step 5: Let It Set (3 Minutes) #
Hold the tray gently in place without movement for a full 3 minutes. Use a timer. Don’t talk, bite, or shift the tray during this time. Movement causes distortions or “drag marks,” making the impression unusable.
🛑 Common Mistakes to Avoid #
- Teeth touching tray edges: Use a larger tray if needed. Teeth should be surrounded by material on all sides.
- Drag marks / distortions: Keep the tray steady—do not reposition or bite down at an angle.
- Shallow impression: Press tray fully until teeth touch the tray base.
- Missing palate area: Fill tray evenly with material to ensure full coverage.
- White streaks in material: Knead more thoroughly. Incomplete mixing causes poor setting.
đźš° Step 6: Remove and Rinse #
After 3 minutes, gently wiggle and pull the tray out. Rinse it under cool water and let it air dry. Do not remove the impression from the tray.
âś… What a Good Impression Looks Like #
- All teeth and gum lines are clearly visible
- No teeth are touching the edges of the tray
- Upper impressions: full palate is captured
- No drag marks or distortion
📸 Send Us Photos Before Shipping #
Before mailing your impression, take clear photos and email them to us with your order number. We will confirm whether the impression is acceptable. Once approved, place the impression (still in the tray) in the zipper bag with the printed return form and send it to the address provided in our confirmation email. Do not use the address on your invoice or delivery note.
If your impression is not successful, don’t worry—your kit contains enough material for a second attempt. If needed, you can also order an additional impression kit.
